Extended Wear Contacts – Sleep With Your Lenses On
Contact lenses are available in two varieties, namely daily wear contacts and extended wear contacts.
The basic difference is that with the former you need to remove the lenses every single day and with the latter you can remove after wearing them for 7 consecutive days.
The extended wear contact lens has been in vogue for sometime now.
In its initial form, the extended lens was worn for 30 days continuously.
Most people had vision problems like being unable to focus on a particular object for sometime etc.
No Need To Remove Lenses For Seven Days
The FDA then changed the time limit for continuous wear to seven days.
Some companies like Ciba Vision and Bausch and Lomb have come up with 30 days wear lenses but they have to be approved by the FDA.
These companies are experimenting with a material that allows six times more oxygen to pass to the cornea than the present material.
People who use toric lenses can also use these disposable lenses that are worn continuously for seven days.
In the initial stages, it was felt that wearing these types of lenses could affect the eyes and it was the case as well.
However, with the advent of new technology, a break through research has found that wearing these types of lenses could be advantageous and better than daily wear lenses.
In fact some suggest that these lenses are better than lasik surgery and more research is being conducted and the day is not far off when lenses could be worn without removing them at all.
